Description:

Kyoto-Kiln Chawan, Nonomura Ninsei, Old Repair
An old Kyoto-kiln chawan dating to the first half of the Edo Period (17th-18th centuries). It is signed with the stamp with the characters or Ninsei referring to the famous Kyoto potter Nonomura Ninsei. There are many Japanese National Treasures made by Nonomura Ninsei. It is unclear if this work was made by the master or if by another artist in his studio. One fact is clear. The bowl was absolutely treasured as it had been broken into 20 pieces and then lovingly restored with aka-urushi or red lacquer. Lacquer was first used in Japan thousands of years ago as glue and then later to fashion objects. Many lacquer repairs are finished in gold and termed kintsugi. In this case as the delicate cream and peach flambe glaze is of a light color the restorer chose red lacquer to compliment the color of the bowl and gold was not used. The bowl is 8.6cm tall and 11.6cm wide. It comes with an old box and cord.
