Description:

Shigaraki Chawan, Early Edo Period, Old Kyoto Collection
A wonderful early Edo Period chawan from Shiga province. This bowl was made in the early 1600s in the tradition of Shigaraki-yaki. It has a charming and playful, rustic shape with pushed in sides and naturally occurring feldspathic glaze. This is low-fire pottery. With research, it may be possible to realize the identity of the maker as the inner foot has a very unusual floret pattern. There are also some incisions around the foot that add to its beauty but may be interconnected hiragana characters that can identify the maker. There is a good deal of variation in the glaze color from white to grey and then into burnt orange and salmon. Shiga is positioned to the northeast of Lake Biwa and has always been famous for its outstanding pottery. It comes in a centuries old box that has wormage and loss. There are several old labels on the box that date to different periods of its history. The bowl measures 12.4cm across its mouth and is 7.8cm tall.
