Description:

Queen Anne Mahogany Tilt Top Candlestand
Possibly East Windsor, New Jersey, c. 1790. Together with a slat back side chair, Bergen County, NJ, attributed to Abraham Demarest, 1850-1890. 2 pieces.

The candlestand marked faintly in chalk "Helen A. Schuyler". There was a Helen A. Schuyler (1869-1954) recorded in the 1870 census as living in West Windsor Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. This piece was possibly acquired by Helen's great grandfather, Aaron Schuyler.

Aaron Schuyler who died in 1847 had a stand worth $1.00 in his inventory. He had extensive wood working tools, ex.: drawknives, veneering saws, patterns, and references to new and old shops. He was also found to have made the newel posts and clothes pins for $2.53 for Samuel G. Wright of Merino Hill, Upper Freehold on Sep. 29, 1810 proving he was a turner. Therefore. he is very likely to have made the stand that descended in his family to his great granddaughter, Helen A. Schuyler who inscribed it.

In Merino Hill there is a Federal candlestand that looks like it was made by the same hand of Aaron Schuyler. On the underneath of the baluster there are the same cut outs as Helen Schuyler's table has on its baluster even though her table was made earlier.
