By Jean Gourdin, dit Gourdin Pere, after designs attributed to Nicolas and Dominque Pineau, French, c. 1755-60. Upholstered a chassis with associated 19th century blue and silver floral silk "lampas broche." Both stamped PERE GOURDIN, one with handwritten label "89/4." Part of a suite of at least six. Two pairs sold at Christie's, London, July 5, 2001, lots 170 and 171, formerly in the Roberto Polo collection. This pair was lot 171 in the aforementioned sale. One pair sold from the Isabelle Goldsmith Collection, formerly in the collection of Antenor Patino, from his hotel in the Avenue Foch in Paris, Christie's, London, December 12, 1996, lot 150. This pair was exhibited in "18th Century Birth of Design: Furniture Masterpieces, 1650-1790," October 2014 to February 2015. The chairs are possibly part of a commission recorded for the Salon at Asniere (B. Pons, Grands Decors Francais, 1650-1800, Paris, 1999, p. 276).
