ca. 1900, painted and parcel-gilt mahogany with inset looking glass, tablet painted with scene of the capture of the USS Chesapeake by the HMS Shannon on June 1st, 1813 as part of the War of 1812; the mirror flanked by painted oval bust portraits of Captain Sir Philip Bowes Vere (P.B.V.) Brooke (British, 1776-1841) and Captain James Lawrence (American, 1781-1813), of whom the latter (born in Burlington, New Jersey) died three days following the battle from wounds sustained during conflict. Lawrence is best known for his attributed last words, "Don't give up the ship", which remains a popular rallying cry in the U.S. Navy.
