Description:

Chippendale Red Painted Pine Cupboard
New England, c. 1830.

Appears to retain its original red painted surface.

From the consignor:
Muriel (Peter's mother) had collected yellowware for many years. Yellowware is earthenware fired at 1600 degrees F. which is a higher temperature than redware fired at 1200 degrees F. It is stronger and less susceptible to breakage than redware. In the early 1980s at the Museum of American Folk Art Pier Show, we helped Muriel find a cupboard to display her yellowware collection. She bought a cupboard, circa 1830, with a flat back. She liked it because it is in original red paint which has mellowed to a plum color. The inside has never been repainted and is now a murky tan. The cupboard was built as one piece. The dealer, Phil Axleband, and I had a real struggle getting it up the two flights of stairs to her Manhattan apartment.
