Brooke Goode

Portland, Maine & New England

Brooke has art in her DNA. She was born in Bedminster, New Jersey, where, in the sixties, her
mother, a Beaux Arts-trained ceramicist, founded one of New Jersey’s first incorporated art
galleries. The Spook Farm Gallery showed works by mid-century European painters and
sculptors, including Henry Moore and Jacob Epstein, before shifting its focus to contemporary
American artists such as Aaron Shikler and Andrew Wyeth. Brooke’s grandfather, Musgrave
Hyde, was a noted architect in the first decades of the 20 th century, designing many grand
country estates in the tri-state area.
Brooke’s artistic lineage led her to explore her own modest talents in ceramics, but in the end,
she chose a career in the literary world. Since earning a BA at Antioch College and an MA at the
University of London, Brooke has pursued a lifelong career as a journalist and editor. She has
traveled widely and lived in London, Australia, and Africa. Her bylines include articles about
Australia’s foremost Aboriginal ceramicist, Thanacupi, and about West African art.
With New England deeply rooted in her genes, Brooke and her Australian husband now live in
Portland, Maine, often visiting their children in Boulder and Brooklyn.
