Associations and Provenance: Nearly all of the Canton collection was inherited from Leslie's Mother, Agnes Taylor. Agnes lived in Massapequa, Long Island, N.Y. and would attend tea parties given in the 1950s in Seaford, Long Island, given by a lady in her 70s. The lady said that her grandfather was a Governor of Rhode Island. (See the oil painting of him, lot 45.) He bought one set of Canton for each of his daughters. The lady lived in an early house in Seaford, with a widow's walk. When the lady's mother died her father remarried their maid and the lady moved out of the house. The lady became very sick and Agnes made her chicken soup and helped her. Just before she died, she sold the Canton collection to Agnes for $100.00 in the late 1950s.
