Description:

Japanese Samurai Sword Guard, Soten School, 18th Century
Here we have a charming middle Edo Period Soten tsuba for shoto measuring 73mm tall by 69mm wide. In the case you would like to mount the guard, the nakago-ana is 28mm long by 9mm wide at its widest point.

As we know, there were two recorded attempts by the Mongols to invade Japan in 1274 and 1281. For centuries later, fantasy talk of a third invasion made for great fiction and storytelling. I cannot prove it but this might be one of those scenes. Three of the five people may represent Mongols with the two bushi in the foreground are defending this castle-town.

There are great details in this work. I usually start looking at this tsuba from the back. There is the rear end of a warrior with a continental styled helmet and distinctly continental flag. On the front side of the tsuba we can see his face peeking out in iron. Next to him another man with a continental styled umbrella sits with a face in silver. The two Japanese bushi, giving chase to a fleeing man on a horse.
