Description:

Japanese Kogo, Incense Burner, Late 19th Century, Shino Yaki
This diminutive incense burner is referred to as a "kogo" and it can be used to store or burn incense. The town if Shino is found in modern day Gifu Prefecture and is widely known for outstanding ceramics. This work was intentionally made to be imperfect in form so it leans and has corners of varying dimensions. The light blue grey painting represents slats of bamboo that boarder a temple garden. This work measures 5.6cm across and 4.4cm tall. Its handle perfectly fits the human hand when removing the top. It was acquired in Kyoto in 1996 and has a new Paulownia wood storage box made by Hakoyoshi in Tokyo.
